Getting Started with palmEM AI

Learn how to navigate palmEM AI, use the AI clinical assistant, search for topics, create bookmarks, and customize the app for your emergency medicine practice.

Your First Shift with palmEM AI

Once you've downloaded and signed in, you're ready to start using palmEM AI. This guide will walk you through the essential features and show you how to get the most out of the app during your clinical shifts.

Understanding the Interface

When you open palmEM AI, you'll see the home screen with several ways to access content:

Bottom Navigation Bar:

  • Home: Returns you to the main screen with category browsing
  • Search: Quick access to search functionality
  • Bookmarks: Your saved topics for rapid access
  • AI: The AI Reference assistant (your clinical consultant)

Home Screen:

  • Categories: Browse clinical content organized by topic area (Cardiac, Trauma, Toxicology, Pediatrics, etc.)
  • Recently Viewed: Quick access to topics you've looked at recently
  • Featured Content: Important updates and commonly referenced topics

Browsing Clinical Content

View all categories

From the home screen, swipe up to see all available categories.

Select a category

Tap any category (Cardiac, Trauma, Toxicology, etc.) to see subtopics within that area.

Open a specific topic

Tap a specific topic to view the full clinical content.

Use the back arrow (top left) to return to previous screens.

Tip: Content is organized the way emergency physicians think - by chief complaint, body system, and clinical scenario. You'll quickly learn where to find what you need.

The search function is the fastest way to find specific information:

Tap the Search icon in the bottom navigation bar, or tap the search bar on the home screen.

Type your search term

Start typing a medication name, condition, procedure, or clinical term. Results appear as you type.

Select a result

Tap any result to view the full content.

Search Tips:

  • Use abbreviations - "MI" works as well as "myocardial infarction"
  • Try different terms - "chest pain" and "cardiac" both work
  • Search is case-insensitive
  • Common synonyms are recognized

AI Reference: Your Intelligent Assistant

The AI Reference is one of palmEM AI's most powerful features. Instead of searching for topics, just ask your clinical question:

Open AI Reference

Tap the AI icon in the bottom navigation bar.

Ask your question

Type your clinical question in the text field at the bottom.

Example Questions:

  • Differential diagnosis for atraumatic leg pain in elderly patient
  • Dosing for propofol for procedural sedation
  • Management of hyperkalemia with EKG changes
  • When to get a CT for minor pediatric head injury

Get your answer

Tap send and receive a comprehensive, evidence-based answer instantly.

Ask follow-ups (optional)

The AI maintains context - ask follow-up questions to dig deeper or clarify information.

The AI understands medical terminology and provides responses specifically tailored for emergency medicine practice.

Bookmarks: Quick Access to Your Most-Used Content

Save topics you reference frequently for one-tap access:

To add a bookmark:

Open any topic

Navigate to a clinical topic you want to save.

Tap the bookmark icon

Usually located in the top right corner of the screen.

Bookmark saved

The topic is now saved to your Bookmarks for quick access.

To access bookmarks:

Tap the Bookmarks icon

Find it in the bottom navigation bar.

View your saved topics

All your bookmarked content appears in a list.

Open instantly

Tap any bookmark to access that topic immediately.

When to use bookmarks:

Frequently used protocols

Save topics you use every shift like RSI or suture selection.

Common medication dosing

Bookmark medications you reference often for quick access.

Institution-specific workflows

Save your hospital's specific protocols and guidelines.

Complex calculators

Bookmark calculators you use frequently for faster access.

Personal Notes: Customize Content for Your Practice

Add your own notes to any topic - institutional protocols, personal pearls, or department-specific guidance:

To add a note:

Open any topic

Navigate to the clinical content you want to annotate.

Tap the notes icon

Often located near the title or in the menu.

Type your note

Add your custom information or reminders.

Automatic save

Notes save automatically and sync across your devices.

To view your notes:

  • Notes appear within the topic where you added them
  • Only visible to you (synced across your devices if signed in)

Great uses for notes:

  • Your hospital's specific protocols that differ from standard guidelines
  • Personal dosing preferences or clinical pearls
  • Reminders about local resources or consultants
  • Tips from experienced colleagues

Making palmEM AI Work for Your Workflow

During Resuscitations:

  • Bookmark your critical care protocols (ACLS, PALS)
  • Use search for quick medication doses
  • Ask the AI for rare complications or unusual presentations

For Diagnostic Support:

  • Ask the AI for differential diagnoses
  • Use clinical calculators for risk stratification
  • Review decision rules (NEXUS, PERC, Wells)

For Learning:

  • Explore topics you don't see often
  • Ask the AI to explain complex concepts
  • Read protocols before your next shift starts

Offline Access

palmEM AI works offline after initial download. Clinical content is available even without internet connectivity. The AI Reference requires an internet connection, but all browseable content, search, bookmarks, and notes work offline.

palmEM AI is regularly updated with new content, guideline changes, and features. Enable notifications to stay informed about important updates.
